Most people open the aurora page, see a Kp of 2, and go to bed. That is backwards. Northern lights forecast Iceland explained in one line: the cloud map matters more than the Kp number, because Iceland already sits under the auroral oval. What follows is how to read vedur.is at 18:00, what road.is tells you before you drive, and why your three aurora apps never agree.

The page you want is the aurora forecast on vedur.is, run by the Icelandic Met Office. There is an English version. It is plain and slightly ugly, and it is still the only forecast built specifically for Iceland by the people who model Iceland's weather.
Two things share the screen. A map of Iceland showing cloud cover, with a time slider running from about 18:00 to the following morning. And a small panel showing aurora activity on a 0-9 scale for tonight and the nights after.
The colours catch people out. Green means clear sky. White means cloud. You are hunting green patches, not green aurora. There is also a low, middle and high cloud toggle. Use it: high thin cloud you can often see straight through, while low cloud is a lid.
Kp is the planetary K-index, a 0-9 number for how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is over a three-hour window. Higher numbers mean the auroral oval, the permanent ring of activity circling the magnetic pole, expands and pushes further south.
Here is the part that matters. Iceland sits at 63-66 degrees north, already under the oval. You are not waiting for the aurora to travel to you. It is usually up there, and Kp only says how strong it is and how far south it spills.
So: Kp 2 or 3 is enough in Iceland. I have watched a full-sky display on a forecast of 2. Kp 4-5 is a good night. Higher numbers mostly matter to people in Scotland. If you stay indoors because the number says 2, you will miss most of your chances. Treat it as background, not a green light.
Clear sky beats solar activity every time. Kp 2 under a clear sky gives you aurora. Kp 6 under solid overcast gives you nothing, because the light is up there and you cannot see through the cloud.
Iceland's weather is intensely regional. The south coast can be under rain while Myvatn in the north is clear. That is the tactic: read the cloud map and drive to the green. A hole in the cloud 90 minutes away is a realistic option here, because the roads are empty and Route 1 is paved for all 1,322 km.

Check at 18:00. By then the model has run on afternoon data and you are looking at the real night ahead rather than a guess made at breakfast.
Darkness is rarely the constraint. Around the winter solstice you get roughly 4-5 usable daylight hours, light creeping in near 11:00 and gone by 16:00. Put waterfalls and glacier walks in the middle of the day and keep the evening open.
A gap in the cloud 100 km away is useless if the road is shut. Before driving at night, open road.is, also served as umferdin.is. Every stretch of Route 1 is colour-coded, clear through slippery, snow, ice and closed, and updated through the night by the road authority.
On the weather side, watch wind speed and gusts. Around 15 m/s makes standing outside miserable, 20 m/s and up makes it dangerous, and a gust can rip a car door off its hinges. safetravel.is carries alerts and lets you file a travel plan.
Three apps, three answers. There are reasons.
Working method: vedur.is for cloud, any app you like for the activity number, and your own eyes every hour. Step outside, give your vision five minutes to adjust, look north. A faint aurora looks like a grey cloud that refuses to drift.
A guided hunt buys two things. A driver who has been reading the same forecast since morning and knows which valley clears first, and the fact that you are not the one driving on ice at midnight.
Rough ranges, and they move with season and operator: a large coach hunt from Reykjavik runs about EUR 55-90 per person, a small-group minibus EUR 90-150, and a private aurora tour is priced per vehicle, commonly from around EUR 400.
Most operators will take you out again at no charge if the tour ran and nothing showed, but terms vary: one repeat, or the rest of your stay, or a refund instead of a second try. Read the policy before booking. The tours overview shows what runs in which months.
A moderate aurora looks to the naked eye like a pale grey-green band, slow and vague. Your camera on a 5-10 second exposure will show pink and violet you could not see. That is the sensor, not a trick, and it is why some people come away flat. A strong night, when the sky breaks into fast vertical curtains, is rare and worth the three cold nights it cost.
Season runs roughly September to March. September and March bring milder weather, more daylight and easier driving. December and January bring the longest nights and the worst odds of a clear one.
Build the daylight around it. Natural blue ice caves under Vatnajokull open November to March only, because they are meltwater channels that are safe only while the glacier is cold. The Katla ice cave from Vik under Myrdalsjokull runs year-round, ash-streaked black and blue rather than pure blue. The Langjokull ice tunnel is man-made and open all year. Glacier hikes run year-round with a certified guide, and crampons and helmet are handed to you at the car park. Kp 2 or 3 is usually enough. Iceland sits under the auroral oval, so the lights are often overhead at low activity levels. Kp mainly describes how far south the oval spreads, which matters more to viewers in Scotland or northern Germany than to anyone standing in Iceland. Clear sky is the real requirement.
Use vedur.is for cloud cover, because it runs a high-resolution model built for Icelandic terrain. Apps are fine for the activity number and for alerts. When an app and vedur.is disagree about cloud, believe vedur.is.
Roughly September to March, whenever you have darkness, clear sky and solar activity at the same time. September and March give milder weather and easier driving. December and January give the longest nights, but around the winter solstice you also get only about 4-5 usable daylight hours for sightseeing.
On a strong night, yes, from darker spots like Grotta or Oskjuhlid. On an average night the city glow washes out a faint display. Twenty to thirty minutes out of town, away from streetlights, changes the result more than any gear does.
Most operators offer a free repeat rather than a refund if the tour ran and no aurora showed. Terms differ: some give one retry, some let you rejoin any night during your stay, and a tour cancelled for weather is normally refunded instead. Check the specific policy before booking.
It can be, with a 4x4 on studded tyres and a check of road.is before you leave. Watch wind gusts, keep the drive short, and turn back if conditions change. F-roads are closed in winter. Never stop on the road to look up, always pull into a lay-by or car park.
