Iceland conditions today

Five official feeds, one page, refreshed every half hour: weather warnings by region, the status of every Ring Road section, which highland roads are open, whether anything is erupting, and tonight's aurora odds. Each panel is read straight from the Icelandic authority that issues it.

What to check, and in what order

Icelanders do this in a fixed sequence every morning of a drive, and it takes about two minutes. The order matters, because each step decides whether the next one is worth reading.

Why one page

These five feeds live on five different official sites, in two languages, in formats built for meteorologists rather than for someone with a rental car and a ferry to catch. This page reads all of them every half hour and states the answer in a sentence. Each panel links through to the full detail if you want the reasoning.

Everything here is sourced from the bodies that actually issue it: the Icelandic Met Office for weather and warnings, the Icelandic Road Administration for road status, ICE-SAR for travel alerts, and NOAA for space weather. We do not editorialise the numbers, and when a feed goes quiet we say so rather than showing you yesterday's answer.

What tends to matter, by season

SeasonThe panel that matters
Nov–MarWarnings and roads. Wind closes Iceland far more often than snow, and this is when a day gets rearranged.
Sep–AprAurora. Cloud cover decides your night more than the Kp number does.
Jun–SepHighland roads. The F-roads open on a different date every year, route by route.
Any timeEruption status. Reykjanes has erupted repeatedly since 2021, always with only hours of warning.
The one rule: never drive past a closed-road gate, and never stop on the road itself to look at something. Emergency number in Iceland is 112; the road service line is 1777.

Planning rather than checking

If you are still building the trip rather than driving it, start with the 7-day Ring Road itinerary, then the car — which is the decision that determines how much of the above can stop you. In winter a 4x4 on studded tyres turns most of these panels from a problem into a delay.
