This is the leg where the Ring Road stops being a tourist trail and becomes a coast road: cliffs on one side, ocean on the other, and hairpins around fjords named after the villages at their heads. It is slower than the map suggests — not because of stops, but because the road itself demands attention and rewards it.

Out of Höfn the road dives through the Almannaskarð tunnel and hugs the shore under the Eastern Horn — the stretch past Hvalnes and Þvottárskriður sits on scree slopes above the surf and closes in the worst winter weather. Djúpivogur is the halfway village; after Berufjörður the modern road cuts inland through Öxi's replacement route via Breiðdalur and Skriðdalur down to Egilsstaðir. The shortcut over Öxi (939) saves ~60 km in summer but is a steep gravel mountain road — skip it in anything marginal.

The scree sections south of Djúpivogur and the inland heaths both flag in storms; when the coast road closes there is no quick alternative, so plan this leg around the forecast rather than the clock. Öxi is closed in winter, full stop.
Only in dry summer weather with a confident driver: it is steep gravel to 530 m and saves about 45 minutes. The coastal road is longer, paved and better in any doubt — and prettier anyway.
Djúpivogur is the natural break: harbour, café, fuel. Hvalnes lighthouse is the photo stop everyone remembers. The fjord villages past Breiðdalsvík add detours if the day is loose.
