Höfn is where the south coast ends: 455 km of Route 1 that contains most of what people come to Iceland for — the waterfalls, the black beach, the glacier country, the lagoon. Driven straight it is a five-and-three-quarter-hour slog; driven properly it is the first two days of every good Ring Road plan, with the langoustine dinner in Höfn as the finish line.

Everything on the Reykjavík–Jökulsárlón page applies here, plus the final 80 km: the road threads between the Vatnajökull outlet glaciers and the sea across Breiðamerkursandur and the farmlands of Suðursveit. This last stretch has the highest single-lane-bridge density on Route 1 — the car closer to the bridge goes first — and reindeer graze the verges in winter. Höfn itself sits a few kilometres off Route 1 on Route 99.

From November to March, treat this as three legs with decision points at Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur: sections here close for wind and drifting snow, and once you pass Vík there is no alternative route — sea on one side, ice cap on the other. The live panel above is the whole corridor.

No. Route 1 along the coast is the only road. The highland routes are summer-only 4x4 tracks and save nothing anyway.
