Route · Reykjavík → Jökulsárlón

Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón

The glacier lagoon sits 372 km from the capital, and the single most common south coast mistake is treating that as a day trip. Nine-plus hours of driving past the best scenery in the country, most of it spent not stopping — do it over two days with a night around Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur, and the same kilometres become the best drive in Iceland.

What the drive is like

Past Vík the character changes completely: the crowds thin, and the road crosses two vast volcanic outwash plains — Mýrdalssandur and Skeiðarársandur — where wind, not snow, is what closes the road. Between them lie the Eldhraun moss lava field and the farm oasis of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the only real services on the eastern half. The lagoon announces itself at the last moment: a bridge, a car park, and icebergs where the map said nothing.

In winter

Winter turns this into a serious drive: the sands are exposed, storms close sections for hours, and daylight is short. Stay the night at Skaftafell or Höfn rather than turning back the same day, and check conditions before each leg, not each morning.

Before you go: the live panel above is this exact corridor, refreshed every 30 minutes from Vegagerðin data. For the national picture see the live dashboard; for the car itself, compare rentals.

Common questions

Can you do Jökulsárlón as a day trip from Reykjavík?

Physically yes in summer — about 9.5 hours of driving return. Practically it is the worst way to see the south coast. Break it in Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur and give it two days.

Where is the last fuel before the lagoon?

Kirkjubæjarklaustur at 259 km, then Freysnes by Skaftafell. Fill at half a tank; the eastern stretch is the emptiest part of the south coast.

Is the road open in winter?

Route 1 here is a priority road and usually open, but the sand plains close temporarily in storms. The live status above shows every section of this corridor right now.
