The glacier lagoon sits 372 km from the capital, and the single most common south coast mistake is treating that as a day trip. Nine-plus hours of driving past the best scenery in the country, most of it spent not stopping — do it over two days with a night around Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur, and the same kilometres become the best drive in Iceland.

Past Vík the character changes completely: the crowds thin, and the road crosses two vast volcanic outwash plains — Mýrdalssandur and Skeiðarársandur — where wind, not snow, is what closes the road. Between them lie the Eldhraun moss lava field and the farm oasis of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the only real services on the eastern half. The lagoon announces itself at the last moment: a bridge, a car park, and icebergs where the map said nothing.

Winter turns this into a serious drive: the sands are exposed, storms close sections for hours, and daylight is short. Stay the night at Skaftafell or Höfn rather than turning back the same day, and check conditions before each leg, not each morning.
