Route · Vík → Jökulsárlón

Vík to Jökulsárlón

This is the emptiest, strangest leg of the south coast: two volcanic deserts, a moss-covered lava flow the size of a city, and almost no people between them. It is also the stretch where wind closes the road most often — the live status above is for exactly these sections.

What the drive is like

East of Vík the road drops onto Mýrdalssandur, the black outwash plain of Katla, where sandstorms strip paint off cars — this is what the sand-and-ash insurance is for. Then comes Eldhraun, the 1783 Laki lava field under a metre of moss, and the oasis of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The finale is Skeiðarársandur, the largest sand plain in Iceland, with the Öræfajökull ice cap filling the windscreen for the last half hour.

In winter

Wind is the closer here, not snow: the sands blow shut while the tarmac stays black. If the panel above shows Mýrdalssandur or Skeiðarársandur flagged, wait in Vík or Klaustur — closures usually run hours, not days.

Before you go: the live panel above is this exact corridor, refreshed every 30 minutes from Vegagerðin data. For the national picture see the live dashboard; for the car itself, compare rentals.

Common questions

Where can I get fuel between Vík and Jökulsárlón?

Kirkjubæjarklaustur at 73 km and Freysnes near Skaftafell at about 145 km. That is the entire list — leave Vík with at least half a tank.

Is the drive boring?

It is the opposite of boring, but it is empty. The scenery is planetary — lava, sand, glaciers — with 100 km gaps between coffee machines. Stock snacks in Vík.

How long at Jökulsárlón?

Two hours covers the lagoon and Diamond Beach across the road. Add 45 minutes for Fjallsárlón on the way in — mornings beat afternoons for both light and coaches.
